Post exposure schedule for rabies vaccine
Anti Rabies Vaccination
1st Dose- 0 Day
2nd Dose -3 rd Day
3rd Dose-7th Day
4th Dose -14th Day
5th Dose-28 th Day
0 Day- The day of exposure to dog bite or as soon as possible
Wash the dog bite wound area thoroughly with soap water 2 or 3 times and apply Povidone iodine application.
Use of Rabies Immunoglobulin;
If the wound is of open in nature or lacerated 9 Category III ) Rabies Immunoglobulin can be used for development of passive immunity by infiltrating around the wound area.
Available RIG-Rabies Immunoglobulin ( Antiserum)
Equine origin RIG -Equirab @ 50 units per kg Bwt locally infiltrated and remaining as IM or SC if needed.
Human Rabies Immunoglobulin @ 20 units per kg Bwt.
FAQ:
Immunoglobulin are preferred when the animal is not vaccinated previously
Rabies Immunoglobulin should be given on the 0 day itself.
Beyond the 7th day administration of RIG is not indicated.
Cattle with antibody titre of more than 0.5 IU/ml are considered to be protected against Rabies.
